This beautiful handcrafted chess set includes our Zagreb series with ebonized and natural boxwood pieces matched with our Elm Burl and Erable Chess Board. Our Zagreb originates from the chess set designed for the 1950 Chess Olympiad held in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia. This set stands out from other Staunton designs with its opposite color tops on the king, queen, and bishop and the unique and handsome knight with its graceful curves and down-turned head. Made from boxwood, the ebonized pieces are polished to an obsidian black finish nearly indistinguishable from real ebony. This is a tournament size set with a 3.875" tall king and a base diameter of 1.625". The pieces have thick green baize pads so they slide smoothly across the chess board and are heavily weighted for stability. Our Elm Burl and Erable Chess Board is made for us by Italfama in Italy, the leading chess manufacturer in Europe. Elm burl is one of the most beautiful burl woods in the world with a wide range of brown-orange colors and unique burl wood patterns. The erable is whitened bird's-eye maple and looks and creates a striking contrast with the rich colors of the elm burl. This is an inlaid chess board made from the finest quality elm burl and erable veneer and sealed with a matte polyurethane finish to protect and enhance the beauty of the wood.
